So, the JR league was delayed by a week, so as to avoid conflict with an Exigence release event in a nearby town. Unfortunately, I could not attend the event, so I got in a game at my FLGS. I decided on running Circle for a while, since I figure it was a good way to bone up on my power attacks and general movement shenanigans. I'm not planning on being uber-competitve, and I chose Kromac because I like the model, and I kind of wanted to paint some Tharn.
So, Kromac and some beasts don't generally do well against Saeryn, a Scythean and a Serpah, and yeah, that game was ugly. If I had been thinking, I might have actually managed to pull it off, but I have gotten out of the habit of slamming my own models, and basically conceded the game.
I tried Kromac again today, against pSorscha, and I came close to killing her. Mainly because she lined up a few inches behind one of her jacks, and well within the Gnarlhorns slam range. I just could not seal the deal, and on the other players turn, he stood, popped feat, and killed my poor frozen Kromac. Definitely a "go big, or go home," moment, and I figured that I had at least a 50/50 chance of winning. And, if nothing else, it was fun as hell.
I have to hold on painting anything until Saturday though, since that is the official start date. In the meantime, I am just trying to get stuff assembled and primed. I hope to get at least 3-4 beasts done this month, and start work on Kromac and some Tharn. Should be fun, painting something that isn't a robot, and just because. Hell, it's fun playing games, instead of running things and teaching all the time.

That did not go well
Hooray, another Vassal batrep - because I am too lazy to go paint right now*.
Got in another Vassal game last night against Clexis again. We went with battleboxes, mainly to keep the game short. pDenny versus pKaya, and it wound up being a short game.
pKaya has some nice movement shenanigans available to her, and a really high Def. pDenny has a lot of arc nodes, and an ungodly feat. But it was an ugly game - I just could not hit the broad side of barn, even on the turn when I popped pDenny's feat. You would think that, with boosted dice, I could hit a 9 at least half the time, right? Naah.
I called it, when it got down to a crippled Slayer (with left arm remaining), a crippled Deathripper (movement left, nothing else), a crippled Defiler (just movement), and pDenny, versus a wounded (but not badly) pKaya, an Argus, and the Feral. We tried a couple of theorymachining, just to see if I could survive another turn and win, and pretty much any victory condition for me relied on dice rolls that were much less likely than a horse winning the Kentucky Derby after dropping dead in the starting gate.
Fun game, as always. I can't say that I learned much from it - I think my dice (well, Vassal dice) just were not on my side last night, and there is only so much you can do about that. I did not bank on a lot of luck for anything that I was doing, just getting average dice rolls, and, for the most part, they were not forthcoming.
I"m not blaming dice, per se, but when you have a couple of turns of "OKay, I have Focus 7, need to hit a 16 with the arced venom, I need 9s. I boost, miss. Buy another one, boosting. Miss. Okay then." there is only so much you can do. I got outplayed for part of it, and, I think, on average rolls, I still would have lost, but it would have been a much closer game. As it was, he had me cold, and we both knew it.
* Actually, this is not true. But I registered for AdeptiCon yesterday, and I want to spend a day or two thinking about army lists before I jump into a painting project, so I am not doing much painting until then.

Terminus the beatstick
Great scott! I forgot what a beatstick Terminus is!
I played a game on Vassal last night against one of my local players. Clexis (as he is named on the forums) has been trouncing me on a fairly regular basis with his Skorne, but he is thinking about branching out to Circle when we start our next journeyman league. So, he was trying some Circle, and I was testing an idea that I had for Terminus. No scenario, just a straight-up bloodbath, and we both wound up running tier lists.
He had:
pBaldur
Megalith
Woldwarden
Woldwyrd
Druid Stoneward & Woldstalkers (x2)
Sentry Stone and Mannikins
Shifting Stones (x2), one with Stone Keeper
I was running:
Terminus
3 Slayers
Skarlock Thrall
full Blackbanes
full Revenant Crew
Rengrave
The board was pretty empty - enough terrain, but not too much. A couple of forests (as though pBaldur cannot make his own), some obstacles, etc. I won the roll, and elected to go first. I made a wall of slayers, dropped Terminus behind them, and flanked with Blackbanes on one side, and most of the Revenants on the other. The quartermaster and the Skarlock stayed by Terminus, and Rengrave hung close by.
pBaldur took the middle, flanked with the two units of Stonewards. The contructs were as far forward as possible, as were the shifting and sentry stones. (Quick note - his army made Terminus' feat basically useless. Only four living models. $(*$&$ constructs.)
I spent my first turn basically running everything forward, except Terminus, who cast Malediction on himself and charged, but could not quite get close enough to target one of my Slayers. Clexis advanced his stuff, though not nearly as recklessly.
It was getting late, so I did not take notes on this, but basically, there were a couple of turns where I would advance through the forests that Clexis kept spamming with pBaldur, and he was picking off Blackbanes and Revenant crew left and right. I would get the revenant crew back, and I was making enough tough rolls with Blackbanes that my losses were only a couple of models per turn. Plus, the Vassal dice roller hated him.
Eventually, he gacks a slayer, and has put some serious hurt on another one. And left pBaldur within 9" of Terminus. Terminus flies over everything, and basically pounds pBaldur into the ground. pBaldur only had 2 fury on him when Terminus charge, and the first attack did a whopping 18 damage. (The dice loved me last night. Buy lottery tickets now. Or prepare for the end of the world, as you choose.) It took a few hits, but once Terminus based pBaldur and starting slicing, average dice would have ended it.
It was a good game - heck, a great game. We were talking on Skype, so there was some trash talk going on, and some random complaints about Legion, which is odd, because neither of us were playing Legion.
I need to get in more games via Vassal, and choose something for AdeptiCon. I'd really like to go to a tourney and actually have a fully painted force. I could not quite swing it for GenCon, but I got passably close; if I start working on painting an army again, maybe I could make it happen this time.

August painting results
The pic is bad - I need to take a better one later today

Only managed one model this month: a Wold Guardian for one of my Hordes armies. I was hoping to finish more, but lost too much time to GenCon, and got distracted by the new shineys that I bought there.
I worked on a lot more, but did not finish much of what I started, obviously.

Proof!
Bad pic, but my painting table is occupied with a project that cannot be moved right now. Anyway, they're not sealed, but are otherwise done:

That's 14 for this month, and 24 points total. It's not impressive by certain "Wall of Done" standards, but it is progress of a sort.

PIcs, but no painting
Been sick the last couple of days. I have tried to paint, but gotten very little done. And, since I have been kind of fuzzy-headed (more so than normal, anyway), I have not been super-dilligent whern it comes to sticking to only one faction - thus, I have done a little work on a Dire Troll Mauler, a bit of Menoth, and some assembly work on Khador. None of those are Circle, are they?
Anyway, I hope to get the basic Circle battle pack done by the end of the month. If I am able to paint over the three day weekend, it might actually happen.

Stripping
Miniatures, that is. I have had a unit of Gun Mages soaking in PineSol for so long that I had pretty much forgotten about them. I found them tonight when I was looking for my other Devout.* (Yes, I was putting off painting Circle - I still worked on the unit of Druids, and my Feral now just needs some greenstuff work before priming.) Anyway, they had been in there that the bases had gotten pretty soft - no big deal, but I may have to replace those.
But some of the paint still won't come off. I'm wondering what kind of paint is was - an enamel, perhaps? It would not be the first time that I have gotten used figs that were coated in an oil-based paint. I got most of it off - they are soaking in water now to get any lingering PineSol off them, and I'll see if they are clean enough for priming tomorrow.
I did not get everything done tonight that I wanted too - I kept breaking away to watch commercials. I could generally listen to the game and figure out what was going on without watching it, but I wound up paying more attention to the commercials anyway. Hopefully I won't have as many distractions tomorrow night.
* Mainly because I was writing a wish list, and I had a Menoth army that I was theory-machining. It mainly invovles stuff where I have the cards, but not the models. I may proxy it a few times before buying everything, because Fire of Salvation is a pricey model.

Back to losing again
No pics, sorry.
Got two games in yesterday. The first was a 35-pt, battlebox required, but 'caster swap allowed, journeyman league game. I was running Durgen, the battlebox 'jacks, Thor (and a marshalled Basher), a min unit of High Shields with the UA, and a full unit of Ogrun Assault Corps.
It wasn't even close. I had some bad die rolls, and some bad placement, and I just could not crack the Xersis + Cetrati + Arcuri brick. Gorten would have done better, I think - heck, he could not have done any worse. I really wanted to try Madhammer, however, since I have only used him once or twice so far, and I want to figure him out.
Lost the second game as well. I am painting Circle this month, so I wanted to play at least a couple of games with them. I ran the battlebox, a Pureblood, Druids, Stoneward & Woldstalkers, and Shifting Stones.
Again, I placed badly, but Circle is fast enough that I could undo some of that, but my Legion opponent was into the killbox well before I was, so I was caught in one corner, with limited maneuvering room. I did not do as poorly as in the other battle - I killed a few things, but in the end, the only way I could win was to attempt an assasination run on eThag, which did not end well.
I definitely need to play Circle more, but I won't get in as many games this month as I would like. March should give me a lot more games, and I won't feel restricted to only one faction, like I (generally) have been for the Journeyman league. I probably will bring 2-3 armies with me each week, and then either let my opponent choose which they want to face, or dice between them or something. A couple of the guys at my FLGS are wanting to go play in some tourneys at GenCon, so they really want to play against as many different casters and factions as possible. Fortunately for them, my factional ADD will let me oblige them there.

Just in case I don't do anything else. . .
If I don't manage to do anything else today (and I do intend to get back down to the basement to paint later tonight - got some podcasts to start catching up on as well), I primed pKaya, Moshar, and eHexeris a few minutes. Okay, eHexy is Skorne, but he had been sitting on the bench, waiting for priming for a few days, so adding him to the mix wasn't exactly a huge time investment.
For various and sundry reasons, I don't think that I have bought anything yet this year (although I had some purchases at the tail end of last year), so, for the time being, I am actually gaining ground. I have one order that is (hopefully) on the way, which will set me back, and I am putting together another order for the near future. I'm fine with two minis painted, fifteen purchased.

February target
Well, I haven't taken any pics yet, but after looking around in my painting queue, I chose my faction for February - Circle. I figure that I have at least a couple of wolds that are pretty far along, but I should be able to finish more than just that.
On tap for tonight - I want to get some of the battlebox figs assembled, so they can be primed. I'll probably try and do a little work on the Arguses (Argi?) as well. I don't have a color palette chosen yet - I will probably theme things along either Baldur or Moshar, so greys or tans, most likely.

Domination thoughts
SO, I finished up NanoWriMo - it's 50k words of garbage (50,089, to be precise, although it may still get added to between now and the end of the month), so I can turn some attention to Domination.
I have not read all of the fluff yet, but it seems pretty good so far. I have been warned that attempting to read "All War is Deception, part II" without reading the faction intros is a Bad Idea, so I have not read it yet. For now, I am just going to give a couple of thoughts on each faction:
Trolls
Circle:
Skorne
Legion of Everblight
Gators
Pigs
Anyway - all in all, I liked the book. There are a few thigs that I don't plan on getting as soon as they come out, and others where, if it were feasible, I would camp outside PP and wait for them to be released. The minions are still a sidebar, rather than a faction, but you now have enough options to play them in an unbound game - though your model choices are still really limited, of course. Still, they got about what I expected, although I expected to see one light pig and one light gator warbeast.

Trolls
- Jarl, eGrissel - I'll get both, but I will probably use Jarl more.
- Storm Troll - so, so wrong. I think I need to pair him with Mulg.
- Scattergunner Off & Std - scattergunners got useful. They'll be more fun, and I am glad that I have a full unit already.
- Rok - seems okay, but I wasn't wowed. Need to think about him some.
- Sons of Bragg - I don't care how effective they are, they just look fun.
- War Wagon - about what I expected.
Circle:
- Grayle, eBaldur - I like eBaldur, and will use him. I like the Devourer's Debt mechanic.
- Griffon, Winter Argus - okay, but I don't play Circle enough to really see something nasty about them. They don't seem bad, they just don't seem to be great.
- Ghetorix - I think he will be fun, but his point cost seems a bit high. Again, I don't play Circle, so take that with a grain of salt.
- Gallows Grove - cheap, and I can see using them as a way to shut down tough and healing. Nice art, too.
- Celestial Fulcrum - beautiful model, the "may not be placed" is kind of a pain though.
Skorne
- Naaresh, eHexeris - Naaresh doesn't have issues, he has entire subscriptions. eHexeris will be fun.
- Cyclops Raider - Far Strike as an animus? Be still my beating heart. Pity is is model, not unit, but that's okay.
- Venator Slingers - AoE with corrosion? Cheap? I think I need some.
- Archidon - I like him. No real armor for a heavy, but flight and critical pitch will be fun, and he is cheap.
- Tiberion - Xerxis has a new best friend. Can't wait for this big guy.
- Animantarax - I like it. I think it will be fun, but it will be a harder battle engine to use than the Khador war wagon, I suspect.
Legion of Everblight
- Kallus, eVayl - Kallus looks like fun, and his fluff is great. eVayl seems solid, and her feat is pretty useful, but tricky. Order of spells will matter there.
- Nightlurker - seems useful, but I like the animus more than the stat line.
- Succubus - decent warlock attachment, nothing special, IMO.
- Proteus - not a big fan of the "everything on a carnivean chassis" sculpt, but that's just me fussing after putting together several scythean/carnivean in a row. Would not have been so bad, if I could have used the plastic kits that aren't out yet. Seems nice enough otherwise.
- Farilor & Std - seem decent, but my legion armies to date have been beast-heavy, infantry light.
- Throne of Everblight - just weird. Will get one, just to paint it, if nothing else.
Gators
- Maelok -undead gator goodness. Love him.
- Boneswarm - cheap, terror - fits well in Maelok's theme force too.
- Swamp Horror - I like it, but I need to think about how best to use the Elasticity animus.
- Gatorman Witch Doctor - look, I can make gators undead at will. And Maelok's feat positively affects friendly faction undead. Sounds good to me. Want these guys now. Or at least before GenCon.
Pigs
- Sturm & Drang - looking forward to playing these guys.
- Road Hog - need one, just for the roast pork jokes. Assault with a 10" spray is nice too.
- Slaughterhousers - these have been out for a while, and everyone probably has formed an opinion by now on them.
- Targ - Dr. Arkadius has a friend. I like him, and he has proven moderately useful the couple of times I have used him.
Anyway - all in all, I liked the book. There are a few thigs that I don't plan on getting as soon as they come out, and others where, if it were feasible, I would camp outside PP and wait for them to be released. Quick Khador and Circle pics
Took these in a hurry, so the quality is low, but it's proof that I am doing something.

I'll take better pics tomorrow, but my Khador battlegroup is almost done. Sorscha is better than half done - I hope to finish the skin tones, the hat & hair, and maybe the cloak tomorrow. Heck, if the kids play in the basement (thank you heat index of 100+), then that means more painting time. I would love to have Sorscha done before the weekend - it would mean that I have a pretty good chance of getting both battleboxes done before the end of the month, as my Cygnar jacks are almost done, and Stryker is at least started.
The shifting stones were just to get them out of the way, as I said. They were low-hanging fruit. I also started the base colors on my shredders, and did some assembly on the carnivean.

While the batteries charge. . .
The batteries in the camera need to be recharged, so no pics until later tonight, but I actually finished some models yesterday!
Yes, it's true. It's also not too impressive - I finally finished off the unit of Shifting Stones that have been 75% done or so for oh, I don't know, two years? But, they are finally done, based, and sealed. I go from four completed models to seven, which is a huge improvement, in terms of raw numbers, but weighed against the unpainted? A scratch.
I still have 595 models to go.
On the plus side, I might actually get my two Khador jacks done tonight, and possibly my Defender and Lancer as well. Even if I don't, I will be taking pics of them and posting them, just because. I really, really want to start knocking at least battlebox armies out of the way, and not just for ulterior motives.

Progress report
Well, I did not get as much time in the basement as I had hoped, nor was it terribly productive. Still, I started laying down the base colors for the Menoth battlebox, did some detail work on the Cygnar 'jacks, base skin tone on the Argus models, and put together a couple of models.

Inventory day (part 2)

Yep, 601 figures. On a faction basis, it breaks down as follows:
Cryx - 69 models
Circle - 35 models
Cygnar - 64 models
Legion - 8 models
Khador - 8 models
Skorne - 117 models
Menoth - 38 models
Trollbloods - 85 models
Retribution - 79 models
Minions - 71 models
Mercenaries - 27 models
The sad thing is that 4 of them are painted. Yep, 4. There are more that are "done," but I am not counting them, since they are headed for the strip bath later on this week. There are perhaps 50 or 60 more that are very close to being finished - a few evenings of dedicated work would finish the unit of Immortals, a minimum unit of Gatormen, a couple of Cryx jacks, Hakar, and so forth. And, for the record, although not everything is assembled and primed, most of it is, and most models even have some color on them. (Yes, I am grasping at straws here. . . cut me some slack, right?)
Anyway, in addition to the inventory, and the priming of the two models earlier, I got the backpacks onto a full unit (plus command) of Houseguard riflemen, and they got primed as well. Not the most productive day, but certainly not something to be ashamed of, either.
