And now for something completely different

I've been reading a lot of the Convergence spoilers lately, and I will have some thoughts on them once I actually have the stats in hand, so instead I am going to randomly post the stuff that I should have coming down the pipe at me, demanding that I paint them:

First off, my Reaper bones order.  I jumped in on the Kickstarter for the project, and, when it arrives, I should be looking at approximately 250 minutes or so - Vampire plus the Sophie plus Cthulhu plus some extra dragons.  I should see that in the next month or so.

Later this year, I should be getting my figs from Relic Knights.  I could go back and do the model counts, but the number is somewhere between 50 and 100 figs.  I should also be seeing my Rivet Wars models, just over 100 of them.  And, my Wild West Exodus stuff will arrive - somewhere about 50 models.

That's a lot.  But I also have a Galleon on the way, a Ragman on back order, a full unit of steelhead riflemen, a couple of razor boars, and I'll be gaining probably 5-15 more warlocks/warcasters by mid-June.  Plus (hopefully) the initial release of CoC.

And, depending on some trades, I might still jump in on the Robotech kickstarter.  And I have some other figs that I want to pick up - some Firestorm Armada, possibly one of the MERCS squads, a few Malifaux figs. . . .

I really should get painting now.

Yay - I finished something!

Finished these last night, except for the weathering powder and the Rhulic script. Got those done today, and they have been sealed, so I guess I have to call them done now. The pics aren't the best, but if they are needed for the gallery, that's fine.

This was my first attempt to use the weathering powders on something like a miniature. I have used them for a model train layout, but that stuff gets a lot less handling than your average gaming piece. I had some problems with them at first - I actually blasted some off when I started sealing them, but that's probably for the best, since I had accidentally been a bit heavy-handed with them.



I cheated and used a technical pen for the script. Much easier than trying to paint it.



I needed some way to tell my Gunbunnies apart, and I will probably get another Basher later this year, so I might as well mark it now.





I was going for something similar to Tonka yellow, and wanted to have the 'jacks with some battle damage. The yellow gave me a lot more problems than it should have - I picked up the figs used, and they had been primed black. I should have spent the time stripping them, but I tried to just push through it. In real life, the colors are a bit better than they are in the pics, but I'm not super-happy with it. (Not annoyed with it enough to thinking about stripping them anytime soon, although I probably will at some point, if I ever start clearing off my backlog of figs.)

So, Basher (7 pts) + Gunner (3pts) = 10 pts for January. Not great, but I'll take it. If nothing else, it stops me using my "Get Out of Painting Free" card in the 2012 challenge.

Now - on to February. The Journeyman league is almost over, so I can play whatever I want next month. According to my iBodger log, the only two factions for which nothing is finished are Retribution and Menoth. Several other factions have only one or two models actually completed, so it's not a huge difference - I mean, going from 0% to .8% is not huge jump, right? Maybe I will paint some Skorne for this month - I could finish some Immortals and an Ancestral Guardian fairly easily, and then try to get some base colors down on some other models.

Or I could paint Circle. I have a couple lists that I would like to try, although I am a few models short. (How did I manage to have pBaldur all this time, and never pick up Megalith?) I could knock out some Legion beasts fairly easily, although I may save those for later on in the year, when time is short, and I need easy projects. Or when I want to paint 30-50 points in a month.

Maybe I should just finish up my Khador battle engine. It's started, but not too far along, and I think I have a lot of spare time in the next couple of weeks. I might work on odd projects until the weekend, and decide Saturday night. I'll still probably stick to one faction this month - I just don't know which one, as of yet.

This is why I say I have a problem. . .

OKay, aside from the fact that the pics for the Minuteman were released today, and of course, I want a couple of them (for a Kraye list, of course), tonight was yet another piece of evidence that I have some pretty strong faction ADD.

Remember how, just a couple of weeks ago, I suggested that I might benefit from a structured approach to my painting? So far, I have been doing alright by it - I have done virtually no painting on non-Mercenary, and even non-Rhulic, models. Of course, that did not stop me from working on assembling models from other factions. In my defense, I was actually waiting for the paint to dry on a couple of armor sections so that I could add the next layer, and I worked on getting some long-WIP models ready for priming.

I was going to try and get my High Shields together, but somehow I lost the left arms to 4 of them. They'll sit in that state for another month or two, although I do intend to have them assembled and primed at least before the first of June. (No, they are not likely to be my GenCon army. . . but I do like them enough to think of them as a decent backup choice.)

Gotta have 'em all!

As of yesterday, I can field at least 35 points for every faction. The only merc contract that I cannot field is Talion, although all of my mercs other than Searforge are pretty weak. Sure, for some factions, my lists are pretty thin, and I don't have a lot of wiggle room, but my main goal for the 2011 year is now complete.

And, since I have several months left, I guess I can start on my next goal - having decent 35 point armies for every faction, contract, or pact. I'm thinking I'll start with Talion, then pick up some Steelheads, grab some more Khador, pick up another couple Legion units & beasts, and then bulk up my Circle.

One step forward. . . .

And about nine steps back. Last night, I got Targ and Lord Ossyan assembled (and just primed them a few minutes ago), and got some pretty significant work done on a Squire, a Firefly, a Grenadier, the Storm Strider, a magnetized Cygnar heavy, a Gun Boar, a dozen or so Ork boyz, and probably another five or ten models. Sounds good, until I mention that I also am in the process of getting rid of my IG army for 40k - and will be using the cash to buy some Khador and Legion models.

So, yeah - the IG that hasn't been included in my model count for years is going away, and I will have playable (albeit bad) 35-pt armies for every faction. (I have Rhulic for my Mercs - although I want to have pirates and a magnus force before the end of the year as well, because I am silly that way.)

I'm not making foolish choices for my Khador or Legion - solid beasts, and decent units, but I am going for some variety, and will be working on synergy down the road.

Tonight, I plan on getting more stuff painted (the squire is actually almost done, and I think the Grenadier is close), and taking pics of some (also uncounted) miniatures that I am offering someone. It won't be quite as large as what I will get for the IG tanks, but it should let me pick up a unit and a couple of solos/casters. I've been thinking that my Cryx really need Blackbane's Raiders, just because they look cool, and my Menoth still needs a book, which means I really should get a second Ghost Sniper for my Retribution (because 2 Ghost Snipers can kill the book in one turn). . . .

Last night, and impending distraction

So, my goal for this week is not to finish any particular figure, color, or the like. Rather, my goal this week is to spend at least seven hours at my painting table, whether it is trimming, priming, basing, painting, whatever. I want to firmly establish the habit of me going down to the basement, almost every day, for at least a brief period, and working on stuff.

And no, time spend sitting at the table, head in hands, moaning "Oh $%($^%, look at all the unpainted $%)$*%" does not count.

So anyway, last night, I pinned and glued a Bull Snapper, worked on pStryker a little, did some base colors on a Firefly, did some detail work on four Reaper CAV figs, some touch up on my dice tower, fixed my Mangler (right arm had popped off, not surprising since it was never pinned. It is now.) and probably a couple of other things that escape my memory.

And yes, tonight I hope to get down there again, once I have cowed the lawn into submission and put together the new computer desk. And again tomorrow night. But, any victories (other than time in that uncomfortable chair) are short-lived, since I am looking at yet another possible trade - a Warmaster army of mine that has been gathering dust, in exchange for some Khador and Legion figs. With some careful choices, and a fruitful negotiation, the only thing that will keep me from fielding at least 35 points in every faction is the fact that I am still missing the MK II Legion deck.

The advantage of army ADD

Since I haven't gotten much time to paint in the last couple of days (stupid lawn keeps needing mowing - every summer, I wonder how much it would be to turn the entire yard into a parking lot), I thought I would write about how army ADD has some advantages.

Sure, I lack focus. Sure, I don't master any one army. Sure, it gives me a giant pile of lead in the basement that sits there, lurking in the dark, slowly growing and causing the earths crust to deform in a way that will eventually result in a new fault line being created. But, it means that, when going through secondary sales locations (like bartertown or ebay), I can almost always find a great deal. Eventually, yes, I need to make more targeted purchases, but since I had planned on picking up Legion of Everblight stuff anyway, a random lot of someone else's extra Legion stuff at a steep discount is a good thing.

My Warmachine/Hordes goal for 2011 is to have a 50 point playable (though not necessarily competitive) army for every faction, including Mercs and Minions, in both system. Right now, I know I can field that for Skorne, Trollbloods, Cryx, Retribution and Gators. I think I can with Cygnar, Menoth, and Circle. Khador, Mercs and Legion all need some work, but it's certainly more doable, even if I had to start from scratch.
